Humberto Maturana y Francisco Varela publican De máquinas y seres vivos. Buscan una definición de "lo vivo" que no dependa de enumerar propiedades — reproducción, metabolismo, irritabilidad — sino que señale una organización: una red de procesos químicos que produce a los componentes que la sostienen y, a la vez, traza su propia frontera. Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela publish Of Machines and Living Beings. They look for a definition of "the living" that doesn't depend on listing properties — reproduction, metabolism, irritability — but rather points to an organization: a network of chemical processes producing the very components that sustain it and, at the same time, drawing its own boundary.
Le ponen un nombre: autopoiesis, del griego autós (sí mismo) + poiesis (producción). No es metáfora. La membrana celular es producida por las enzimas que la membrana misma encierra. La célula contiene literalmente lo que la fabrica. El bucle es químico, no figurado. They give it a name: autopoiesis, from the Greek autós (self) + poiesis (production). It's not a metaphor. The cell membrane is produced by the enzymes the membrane itself encloses. The cell literally contains what fabricates it. The loop is chemical, not figurative.
Clausura operacionalOperational closure
El sistema vivo está definido por su lógica interna, no por sus entradas. No hay "input" y "output" en sentido informacional clásico: el medio lo perturba, pero las respuestas las determina la organización propia. La célula no obedece al entorno — se inquieta con él. The living system is defined by its internal logic, not by its inputs. There is no "input" and "output" in the classical informational sense: the environment perturbs, but the responses are determined by the system's own organization. The cell does not obey the environment — it is perturbed by it.
Acoplamiento estructuralStructural coupling
Pero no es solipsismo. La célula está acoplada al medio: cada perturbación dispara cambios estructurales internos sin que el medio los dicte. La célula y su entorno se "co-derivan" — cambian juntos por contacto, no por instrucción. Es el mismo régimen del organismo y su mundo. But it isn't solipsism. The cell is structurally coupled to its medium: each perturbation triggers internal structural changes that the medium does not dictate. Cell and environment "co-drift" — they change together through contact, not through instruction. The same regime governs organism and world.

El bucle es literal: las enzimas producen la membrana, la membrana encierra las enzimas, las enzimas necesitan la membrana para concentrarse y catalizar. The loop is literal: enzymes produce the membrane, the membrane encloses the enzymes, the enzymes require the membrane to concentrate and catalyze. Pull any of the three out of the loop and the whole system shuts down. To live is precisely the loop's insistence on closing itself, once again, now.

Te cortas. En horas, las plaquetas se agrupan; en días, los fibroblastos tejen colágeno; en semanas, la piel se ha rehecho. El mismo sistema que la herida rompió, se reorganiza para repararse. No es un ingeniero externo el que arregla la piel: es la piel haciéndose otra vez a sí misma. You cut yourself. In hours, platelets gather; in days, fibroblasts weave collagen; in weeks, the skin has remade itself. The very system the wound broke reorganizes to repair itself. No external engineer fixes the skin: it's the skin making itself again.
Biológico — la mitocondria y la célulaBiological — mitochondrion and cell
Cada mitocondria produce ATP, la moneda energética que mantiene viva a la célula que la contiene. Sin la célula, la mitocondria no existe; sin la mitocondria, la célula no puede pagarse el costo de ser. Lo contenido sostiene a su continente, y al revés. La bioquímica está hecha de bucles cerrados así. Each mitochondrion produces ATP, the energy currency that keeps alive the cell that contains it. Without the cell, the mitochondrion does not exist; without the mitochondrion, the cell cannot afford the cost of being. What is contained sustains its container, and vice versa. Biochemistry is made of closed loops like this.

Niklas Luhmann llevó la idea al campo social: una organización es autopoiética si produce las normas, los roles y las comunicaciones que la sostienen. La crítica es justa — una empresa no metaboliza como una célula — pero la intuición sigue: hay sistemas humanos que se hacen a sí mismos, y otros que solo son mantenidos desde afuera. Distinguirlos cambia cómo se interviene. Niklas Luhmann took the idea to the social field: an organization is autopoietic if it produces the norms, roles and communications that sustain it. The critique is fair — a company does not metabolize like a cell — but the intuition holds: some human systems make themselves, and others are merely held up from outside. Telling them apart changes how you intervene.

Autopoiesis keeps an organization — the one that produces the variables. When the organization holds, the variables may shift considerably without the system ceasing to be itself.

No es replicaciónIt isn't replication
Una bacteria se replica produciendo otra bacteria; eso es propagación. La autopoiesis es individual y presente: esta célula concreta, ahora mismo, está produciéndose. Replicar es un lujo posterior — primero hay que sostenerse. A bacterium replicates by producing another bacterium; that's propagation. Autopoiesis is individual and present: this specific cell, right now, is producing itself. Replication is a later luxury — first you must sustain yourself.

La célula depende totalmente del medio para materia y energía. Lo autopoiético es la organización, no la sustancia. Maturana insistía: "autonomía operacional, dependencia material". Confundir las dos lleva a la trampa mística. The cell depends entirely on the environment for matter and energy. What is autopoietic is the organization, not the substance. Maturana insisted: "operational autonomy, material dependence." Confusing the two leads to the mystical trap.

La frase es la "tarjeta de presentación" de la autopoiesis: corta, literal, deliberadamente sin metáfora. Maturana repetía que el adverbio literalmente no era estilístico — era para evitar que la idea se diluyera en analogía. La vida se hace, no se mantiene. The line is autopoiesis's calling card: short, literal, deliberately metaphor-free. Maturana would repeat that the adverb literally wasn't stylistic — it was to stop the idea from softening into analogy. Life makes itself; it isn't simply maintained.
Donde se vuelve incómodaWhere it becomes uncomfortable
La crítica más persistente: si el sistema solo se define por sí mismo, ¿no terminamos en un encierro solipsista? Varela mismo la respondió: la clausura operacional no es aislamiento — la célula no deja de tocar al mundo, lo que pasa es que lo traduce. Pero la tensión sigue: cuanto más se traslada la idea a empresas, comunidades o estados, más fácil es perder el rigor biológico original. The most persistent critique: if the system is defined only by itself, don't we end in a solipsistic enclosure? Varela himself answered: operational closure isn't isolation — the cell never stops touching the world, it just translates it. But the tension remains: the more the idea is transferred to companies, communities or states, the easier it is to lose the original biological rigor.
Hay también un costo: si una organización se sostiene a sí misma, también resiste al cambio externo. Lo autopoiético explica por qué los sistemas (vivos, sociales, institucionales) pueden ser tan difíciles de transformar desde afuera. La autonomía es virtud y trampa. There's also a cost: if an organization sustains itself, it also resists external change. Autopoiesis explains why systems (living, social, institutional) can be so hard to transform from outside. Autonomy is both virtue and trap.
